Insulating glass units are made-to-measure glass elements consisting of several panes of glass and sealed spacer bars.
Insulating glass units provide thermal and acoustic insulation, and their performance can be improved with special glass, low-emissivity coatings and filling gases such as argon or krypton. The spacer bars contain a desiccant, which removes moisture from between the panes. Insulating glass units are used in window structures, external doors, glass roofs and all-glass façades, among other applications.
In addition to flat glass, various types of special glass can be used in insulating glass units, including bullet-resistant and burglar-resistant glass, as well as fire-resistant glass.
Energy-saving glass, also known as low-emissivity glass, consists of clear glass coated with a selective coating. Energy-saving glass allows the sun’s short-wave radiant energy to pass through, while reflecting long-wave heat radiation trying to escape from the room back inside.
The U-value of glass indicates its thermal insulation performance: the lower the value, the better the insulation.
